As part of our relentless efforts to identify and share some of the meaningful stories from India and around the world, this week we invited Elliott Noble-Holt for an interview with us. Elliott is an Author, Founder and CEO of MediCopy Services, Inc. Let’s read more about his inspiring journey so far and his advice for our growing community!

Excerpts from our exclusive interview with Elliott:

Tell us about your background and your journey, please.

I was born and raised in Nashville and have almost 30 years of industry experience In healthcare information management.  My passion for this industry began as an employee at a healthcare facility named Tennessee Orthopedic Alliance (TOA) at the young age of 15. My parents had divorced when I was 12 and when I was 15 my mother would pick me up from high school and I would go back to work with her while she finished her shift.

After doing my homework, I would mosey my way into their medical records department to help the young ladies out who worked filing medical charts and pulling charts for appointments, labs, phone messages, etc. I did such a good job that they put me on their payroll for $4.25 per hour, which was the minimum wage in 1993.

I worked there through high school until the last semester of my senior year when my dad died suddenly at the age of 47, which altered my plans and the path I would choose.

What led you to create MediCopy and what kind of contribution is it making?

After a failed attempt at college in 1996, with only 10 days under my belt, I went back to work at TOA. After four more years of working in medical records, in 2000, I saw an opportunity to serve the healthcare industry with more accountability and prime efficiency relative to authorized disclosures and release of health information.

Inspired to improve patient care by providing more efficient health information exchange, I founded MediCopy Services, Inc. I started with $50 in my checking account and no credit. My mother took me to Best Buy to purchase me a copy machine to help with the reproduction of the medical records.

When we were about to check out they told us that we subscribed to AOL.com, they would give us $500.00. I used that $500 to purchase my first copier and began MediCopy almost 22 years ago.

Today, MediCopy provides Health Information Management solutions to over 4,000 healthcare facilities throughout the U.S., having served millions of patients over the years.

What are some of the strategies that have helped you grow as a person and a professional?

This has evolved over the years and through life events, however, but for the last 20 years, I create an annual vision board as I believe that thoughts become things. Humans have over 6,000 thoughts per day, some being great ideas, goals, or visions of who we want to be.

I think it is imperative that I transfer those thoughts, ideas, goals, and visions to a vision board so that I can display this board to be seen daily. However, this is just the start.

The next important part is to put action behind my vision daily. The vision is important but the execution lets me celebrate my progress, growth, and accomplishments.

What drives you to keep going despite the challenges?

Listen, we are granted one life, a life that may last around 100 years or less. What an honour it is to even be on earth to be able to face some of the challenges that we have.

I believe that it is important to give thanks for where I am currently at in life. There is something about stopping and showing gratitude for how far I have come in life, and for the trials and tribulations that have made me who I am.

When I give thanks for all experiences (yes, even the negative ones), it expands the conduit or portal between me, God, and the Universe each time for my thoughts to become things, and my visions to manifest.

Who do you believe has been the biggest source of motivation in your life?

Hands down, my parents. With my father passing away when I was 17 and my mother massing when I was 37, it is my duty to honour them and continue to make them proud, no matter what I am doing.

I am not perfect, I make mistakes but my goal will always be to do my best, be open and honest and live so I don’t have to explain. My husband and daughter also motivate me to be the best I can be for them. It is important to me to hold up my end of the bargain as a parent and spouse, with a goal of never letting them or myself down.

In your opinion, what are the keys to success?

Having a set of core values or beliefs that you do not sway from that helps you make every decision, either personally or professionally, will help save your energy in the long run, will help you retain your joy and free up time so you can focus on your vision and manifest who you are meant to be.

What advice would you give students and young professionals who want to have a successful career and meaningful life?

What we are taught as children in regards to goals, what we can be, and what we are expected to be will change over time. It may be due to a life event, a change in your interest or career, or something out of your control.

Stay focused. Document your thoughts, your vision and put action behind them. Making this a habitual daily pattern will move the needle forward. Remember practice makes progress!
