Excerpts from our exclusive interview with Komal:
Could you please talk us through your background and your journey?
I am an Internationally certified Yoga teacher, certified from Sivananda Ashram, Kerala.
I have been teaching yoga since 2008, and after working in several Gyms in Delhi and NCR, I started my own studio by the name of ‘Komal Yoga and Fitness Studio’ in 2012. I conduct Yoga, Pilates, Kids/Teens Yoga, Pre/Post Natal Yoga, Yoga for senior citizens and Personal trainings at my studio.
My self-designed program called ‘Synthesis’ is an amalgamation of ‘Yoga + Adventure travel’ where I organise treks & retreats that take people out of their comfort zone and help them detox and disconnect from their busy schedules and enjoy raw nature while spending quality time with themselves.
I have organised Synthesis at Rishikesh, Macleodgang, Leh Ladhak, Mount Everest Base Camp, Nag Tibba, Bhutan and in Uttrakhand.
My passion for mountaineering has taken me on several mountains such as Mount Everest Advance Base Camp in Tibet, Mount Kang Yatse in Leh, Mount Aconcagua in South America, Mount Fuji in Japan, Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa and several other treks such as Chadar trek, Indrahara pass, Markha valley & Valley of flowers.
I recently summited 2 mountains in Europe – Mont Blanc – Located in France & Italy and the highest mountain in the Alps & Gran Paradiso – The highest mountain in Italy.
My Yoga Studio is recognised as a ‘Yoga School’ by the ‘World Yoga Organisation’. I have also been featured in several YouTube videos such as ‘Soul I M’ and TV programs on channels such as ‘Active Fitness’
My motto – “The success of our actions lies in the strength of our inner convictions and self-discipline.”
How did you discover your passion?
I have been seeing my mother practising yoga since I was a little girl and today at the age of 72, she is still a regular practitioner of yoga.
The stamina, strength and grace with which she is living today is what motivated me and is a constant reminder that I am on the right path.
How do you manage to keep going despite the challenges? What drives you?
Seeing how yoga has helped me on my own health and wellness journey and how so many people, kids, senior citizens, people recovering from illness etc are getting benefitted from my classes is what keeps me going every day.
I feel even if I can change a few lives through my classes, I will be content that I have done something for my society.”
With that thought and vision in my mind, it strive to do a lot more for the society which needs of Yoga and Wellness.
Who do you believe has been the biggest source of motivation in your daily life?
As mentioned before, my mother has always been my biggest source of inspiration.
My daughters are also regular practitioners of ‘Yoga’ which has helped them to remain fit and healthy.
In fact, one of them has decided to follow my footsteps of becoming an Internationally certified yoga teacher, herself.
What are some of the strategies that you believe have helped you grow as a person?
Self-growth through self-practice, regularly updated trainings, participating and organising yoga festivals, events, yoga discussions and always being open to learning and experiencing new things through travelling, mountaineering and organising yoga retreats has helped me grow as a person.
I strongly feel one should always keep learning not matter how expert you are in you area. As a leader, I ensure I keep myself updated with advance training tools and methodologies.”
In your opinion what are the keys to success?
Having faith in yourself and in your practice; being a role model and actually living and practising what you preach consistently is the key to success.
What advice would you give to our readers?
Health is the biggest wealth.”
No matter who you are, how much you earn, how famous you are if you are unhealthy, you will not be able to enjoy anything in your life.
Whereas even if you don’t have anything in your life, but if you are healthy, you have the capability to turn your life around and create the life of your dreams.
Last but not least, what about your journey makes it satisfying/exciting?
The fact that I have motivated, inspired and helped people to go beyond what they thought was possible for them gives me contentment.
In every class that I walk into; I am excited and happy that I am blessed with this gift to push people out of their comfort zones and make them feel stronger, fitter and happier about themselves and that they could take out some time for themselves to take care of themselves and that can change their entire mood and temperament towards they work, family, work and life.
