Interview With Rahul Bhushan | Founder of BigBoysDiary

Rahul Bhushan, Founder of BigBoysDiary

We spoke to yet another digital entrepreneur – Rahul Bhushan, who is the founder of BigBoysDiary. He had successfully qualified for civil services thrice and is also a topper from IIMC but instead of taking the conventional route of opting for a government or private 9-5 job, he chose his passion and built a community of over 70k+ followers. Today, he is one of the successful bloggers and social media influencer.

Let’s have a look at the excerpts from our exclusive interview with Rahul:

Why did you choose blogging/entrepreneurship over a job?

The perspective towards employment is changing and now more and more Indian youths are turning into a job provider, instead of being a job seeker. Thanks to the digital transformation, the creative space is no more concentrated in the hands of elites and big companies. Now, even as an individual creator,  using the technology and digital space,  one can disrupt the scene and carve a niche for herself/himself.

In my case, instead of a eureka moment it came gradually and is the result of a well-calculated decision.

What gets you out of bed in the morning i.e. what’s your source of motivation?

I have been qualified for Civil Services thrice, I topped IIMC and NOU in my stream. I could have opted for a government or private job, well settled and relaxed life. Rather, I followed my passion and now I am making ends meet to live that passion. What can be a better motivation than this?

Secondly, Big Boys Diary has grown up into a 70k + community in no time and now I have to live up to the expectation of my virtual family. Their love in the form of like and comments inspire me and encourage me to push boundaries.

What challenges/obstacles did you face in your journey so far?

Challenges are parts and parcel of life. If I have to underline any obstacle I had, it would be a ‘Perception’ battle. I come from a middle-class family of Bihar and it’s hard to explain and convince people around you about my work. Therefore it’s a double-edged sword as you are competing with other brands on the external front while simultaneously you are internally confronting your own people about your work and future plans.

Tell our audience more about your failures? How should one bounce back?

Failures are more important than successes. Successes contribute towards your professional growth but failure gives depth to your personality. Every time I fall, I grow as a person and it prepares me for the future.

I feel school and colleges should introduce a chapter on how to tackle failures because it is very important. Because the first time when we fail, we don’t know how to deal with it and some of our kids take extreme steps not because they are scared of failure but because they are not trained how to tackle and come out of it.

Rahul Bhushan, Founder of BigBoysDiary

There are two approaches to deal with failures- First is to analyse the failure, get feedback and move on, while second approach is to just keep thinking about the failure without doing anything to correct it and fail again. Failure is an inevitable part of human life, so the problem does not lie in failure but in the approach to deal with it.

What comes first for you – money or emotions?

Both has its own set of importance in my life. Money holds a critical role in fuelling the business aspirations but the emotion is something which helps you to sustain in the long run.

As a creative person, emotion constitutes the core of content creation because without emotion the content would be like a body without a soul.

How do you handle the pressure and manage stress?

With Chai, Chai is the stress buster for me. Working in digital space, keeps me on my toes, thereby stress and pressure are two constant companions. Small-small lifestyle changes like yoga, meditation etc helps.

What advice would you give to someone starting out, particularly to aspiring women entrepreneurs? Why should people follow their passion?

Don’t quit and don’t be afraid of anything. As Gandhi said, there is no occasion for women to feel inferior to men and if by strength is meant moral power, then women are immeasurably men’s superior.
