Excerpts from our exclusive interview with Rashmi:
Could you please talk us through your background and your journey?
Life was going smoothly as I transitioned from Bcom to an MBA in finance when on day zero Lehman Brothers crashed (2008) and companies backed out.
After six months of applications and rejections, I joined an edtech startup as an Analyst. 1 year of working in a startup taught me everything from office organization to marketing, setting up servers, reading C++ and most importantly working at an education institute and how technology can help.
Further on I worked for Royal Bank of Scotland for a year. In 2012 I moved to Indore and started as a coaching instructor for Personal enhancement courses. That picked up my interest and I went to certify as an Image Consultant, Soft Skills Coach and Trainer’s trainer.
In my journey of being a coach, mentor, trainer and consultant I have dealt with people of all ages and professions.
One thing that I learnt from all this is learning is mandatory but making the process interesting for the learner is much more necessary.”
How did you discover your passion?
I think it was always destiny. If I connect the dots back in my 14 years of work ex, I had to always choose my work because of circumstances, when all doors closed I chose what was available. And every time got abundant success, great satisfaction and lifetime learnings.
As a matter of fact, edtech has been the starting point and I am now again standing at a junction where my complete inclination is towards edtech and promoting learning so that it’s fun, retainable and measurable.
How do you manage to keep going despite the challenges? What drives you?
It’s always the urge to work. I am a workaholic, give me a task and I will accomplish it. Keep me free and I will find or sometimes even create tasks for myself. I have started and restarted my career 5 times in 14 years, and have always found my calling.
Who do you believe has been the biggest source of motivation in your daily life?
Family and friends… it is One powerful support system that is always there supporting, criticizing, motivating, protecting and investing in me. Other than that books and movies keep me motivated.
What are some of the strategies that you believe have helped you grow as a person?
My go to strategies to keep my calm and grow:
> Books: Reading everything I can get my hands on.
> Friends: Having a bundle of people around that are positive and have belief in me.
> Caretaker: I always have that one person I can go to, and discard all my negative thoughts, anger, frustration hence keeping my calm always.
> Talk: Clear communication is the key for any happy relationship.
How can you make sure your teaching style reaches the maximum number of Learners?
With my experience of being into education industry, design learning modules, delivering them on floor, getting feedback on the way of delivery and how I always simplify even the toughest of topics, I have now started designing learning experiences, curriculum and content so that the method reaches more learners.
I aim at modifying the long believed thought that learning is boring, tedious and tough to making it fun, retainable and applied.”
In your opinion, what are the keys to success?
Success is self defined so the keys to success also vary. For me, smart work, passion, love, happiness, indulging into the process of success is success itself. End of the day if the process of what of you do is satisfying, success is ensured.
What advice would you give to our readers?
Value your relationships, in the end, its always about people around. Learn something everyday, you never know what comes in handy.
Last but not least, what about your journey makes it satisfying/exciting?
When my students or trainees tell me how I have impacted their lives at a time when they were lost when they come and tell me after years they remember what I taught and the most satisfying feedback I get frequently is ‘Attending your class is the most active, happy, fruitful hour of the day’
