Excerpts from our exclusive interview with Rupali:
We are aware of your contribution to the ecosystem, talk us through your background and your journey as a women entrepreneur, please.
I feel blessed to be born and brought up in an Armed Forces background that offers a holistic- close-knit, playful, exciting childhood. Also, it allows a foundation soaked in values like- discipline, honesty, hard work, dedication, commitment, camaraderie. And yet, at the same time not taking life too seriously.
Most of my education is a gift of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan Schools across the country as we were posted every two to three years to a new location. And thus the ability to interact and adjust with new friends and companions and a whole new environment added excitement. Certain things that I learned along the way were things like consistent routines, regular exercise, exposure to social events and picnics and excursions, community games. Reading the libraries, maximising what was available – open-air cinemas, green fields and nature.
I always was one of the tomboys, ready to take risks, explore, take up challenges, fall yet stand up again. I was training to be a pilot. However, life had other plans and when it came to my Master’s Degree, I decided to join South Campus, University of Delhi for a selective course in Applied Clinical Neuropsychology and got trained under the expert guidance of Neurologists at the Department of Neurology at Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi where my journey began.”
I continued to study different courses, underwent learning programs that equipped me and enhanced my scope in Clinical Counseling and Career Counseling. Special Education needs, dealing with Autism, Learning Difficulties. By this time my role expanded from a School Counselor, Special Educator, Life Skills Trainer and Career Counsellor to a PGT-Psychology teacher. Further on, I trained in practices of Sound Healing, Clinical Hypnotherapy and transpersonal Regression Therapy (EKAA India & IMDHA, USA& Netherlands) and oncology Practices (Association of Hypno-Oncology Practitioners, London). I started working with clinics across Mumbai and later in the day, I would work from my own setup at home.
By the time I had finished my training in counselling, I had uprooted myself from working with corporates to working with schools which is when I started laying the foundation of my own company and named it very thoughtfully and fondly as ‘Budding Boughs – Mind and Wellness’, and I will share more about it a little later.
It was post my stint with the hospital, to the corporates where I worked in different capacities from sales and marketing, Administration, branch and page coordination with a leading newspaper industry to working with a well known management consultancy that I realised I was not cut out for the corporates. There was more to life than the month end package and a 9-5 job. I needed to have my own space, exercise my free will, explore new learnings and enhance my potentials.”
I had ideas of my own, the courage to walk alone, the confidence to fail and continue still not being driven by circumstances. This opened new avenues for me in the field of Hypnotherapy and transpersonal regression therapy, Sound Healing and combining all of my learnings so far and putting them to good use in helping people resolve their day-to-day issues and lead a quality life. A lot of my students and clients felt inspired and motivated by my journey and this gave me a lot of satisfaction and motivated me further.
It also gave me the good fortune to go ahead and offer my services Pro-bono. to those who could not afford it. We have worked with NGOs, served people of low-income segment, given free workshops which have all been well received. This not only expanded my area of reach but also gave me a chance to understand people’s issues. from a grassroots level. At Budding Boughs we continue to strive with the same spirit and going ahead too.
What attracts you towards entrepreneurship instead of a corporate career?
It was a very conscious decision based on my own self-awareness to follow my heart and exercise my free will. Not that I like to break rules, I set my own rules that I could follow. And slowly but surely learning from my own mistakes, based on my own broad-based researches, readings coupled with teachings and trainings under experts from Delhi University, Deptt of Neurology, Safdarjung Hospital, Jamia Millia Islamia University at New Delhi, EKAA India, IMDHA, EARTH Association, I’m happy to have come so far.
As a child, I held my father as my idol. And he himself taught me to be my very own favourite idol, just as he was to himself. So I have always told myself that if I can’t achieve it, then no one can. Hence, not only in the field of my work but in life as well I have been able to achieve some great feats like running marathons, trekking, long solo drives, overcoming loss of loved ones, overcoming severe illness and other crossroads and speed breakers in life.
All of this connects me to nature, teaching me about the environment we live in and life’s lessons and close insights into people’s lives and helping me connect with them better. All of this contributes positively to all areas of my life, including my work as a therapist.
‘Budding Boughs by Rupali’ is such a unique name; talk us through more about it, please. Our audience would also love to know what kind of problem you are solving?
The very name Budding Boughs signifies exploring New Horizons, taking fresh steps.l towards fresh growth that can be accessed through establishing a network of mutual trust and support.
We all face moments of sadness, frustration, disappointment, anger, or hopelessness. But how do you harbour hope even when things are falling apart around you? Will understanding the problem alone make it disappear? Transformation happens when we delve deep within ourselves. And not by relying solely on willpower and positive affirmations to overcome our own limitations hoping that things will change magically around us.”
To truly experience well-being one must be willing to change unwanted behaviors, feelings, and responses to nurture a sense innocence of wholeness and connection with something that is greater than ourselves that supports us through both challenging and easy times. This inner sense of fulfilment, integrity, and resourcefulness resides within each one of us. All we need to do is address our limitations. And thus we will unlock a profound sense of self that expands and transforms our life in powerful ways.
At Budding Boughs we have you covered. We practice different kinds of therapies, like cognitive therapy that includes counselling, which identifies and changes negative thought patterns to improve mental well-being. We have subconscious therapy that helps unlock the hidden realms of the subconscious through the powerful modalities of hypnotherapy and transpersonal regression therapy and even sound healing.

In your opinion what are the keys to success?
For myself and for Budding Boughs to be where it is as it stands today, the following. Points have been the key contributors to our success –
(1) Being in the present moment, enjoying the journey, and finding fulfilment in whatever we take on in that journey.
(2) Becoming self-aware and learning new ways to cope with shortfalls and using our strengths towards building success.
(3) Having the ability to take decisions and at the same time the humility to bear responsibility,
(4) Building communication channels- be it one-to-one, group sessions, workshops, online for a healthy exchange of ideas and sharing best practices.
(5) Standing up to challenges and critical situations like the COVID. Providing Pro Bono services to individuals and agencies across the society including the corporates.
What advice would you give students and young professionals who want to have a successful career?
Having worked with students and young professionals, guiding them through their life and career journeys has been a learning experience for me as well.
I would encourage students and young professionals in the following ways:
> To be self-aware and develop self-worth and self-confidence
> To be voracious readers and researchers to enhance awareness and deepen knowledge to take good decisions.
> To work towards their own ability to take strong decisions and develop humility to learn and take responsibility and ownership.
> Not to be daunted by failures. Rather learning from them to launch themselves into future success.
> To build trust and networks of support.
> To operate through channels of interdependence and faith.
> Develop compassion and empathy
> Empower self and others with courage and self-belief.
Last but not least, what are the three most important lessons you have learned in your life?
The three best lessons that come to mind that have driven my journey so far and going ahead are:
– Time is but an illusion. The more you are focused on time- Past and future, the more you miss the NOW, which is the most precious thing there is.
– Success to me is happiness, which is the fulfilment derived from the ability to give. And this can only be achieved through setting clear goals.
– The ability to climb mountains, swim seas and fly the sky can be taught. However, the courage to stand strong on your own two feet, stand alone comes from within oneself.
